I think I appreciate my bacon more because I have known a few pigs and understand both their intelligence, humor, and their relentless appetite which included a pet lamb, decorative ducks, and the compost heap.

I grew up in a Midwestern farm town, where livestock’s days were numbered. When cattle, chickens, turkeys, and yes - pigs, reached a certain age and weight, off to the slaughter house they would go. Only in a very few cases were animals spared as pets to be showed at the 4-H events.

It's not just people in the East who care about animals, Bob. I'm 32 and have lived in the Midwest my entire life. A few years ago I went vegetarian and then vegan. Compassion isn't about where you live. It's about what you know and what you choose to do with that knowledge.

Funny, I never thought that enjoying, appreciating, and thinking animals were cute precluded me from enjoying dinner. Fact is, I think I appreciate my bacon more because I have known a few pigs and understand both their intelligence, humor, and their relentless appetite which included a pet lamb, decorative ducks, and the compost heap. And oh, piglets are so very cute.
